Thoughts on social media

It took me awhile to “get” social media like Facebook, twitter, etc. But in the last few months I’ve come to see how powerful of a tool these mediums can truly be. It’s a way to be instantly connected to a significant portion of the human race. Of course natural selection is still doing its thing; filtering out the useless noise and demanding remarkableness if one is to be seen and heard.

And yes there are still downsides and risks involved. Maybe we know too much and are too available and reveal too much? Then again, that may be just the thing we need more of. Dalai Lama once said that he tells all his secrets to strangers. And he’s a pretty happy guy… doesn’t seem to spend too much time worrying.

Sure, things may seem a little shallow when only happening online but is it any less real if our feelings are shaken and emotions moved (sometimes negatively I must admit)? Or if we find clues and maps that guide us into the real world and perhaps discover something new that might change us forever?

Connection. That is the key word. We have become so disconnected from the natural laws that govern life, from each other, from our roots, from ourselves. We spend so much time feeding that disconnection. Often without our awareness. And unfortunately at the expense of our long-term well-being and satisfaction.

I know this doesn’t work for people in other fields who need to maintain an artificial reputation but as for myself, I’m just going to skip all the “playing mysterious” shit and continue to open myself up to the world. Let the world inside my heart. Free myself from the useless baggage (ie. paradigms) I’ve collected throughout the years e.g. rock’n roll mythology, hollywood mega-stardom idolatry, mass consumerism, cultural capitalism, artistic romanticism—as fascinating and cool as they are to flirt with. I intend to remove these layers one by one. To de-program myself from the cultural trance.

Facebook and twitter might be just the answer we need to take things in the right direction. They’ve already tamed many people who I would’ve never imagined to succumb to social networking. Including myself. I suspect the people who will not give in and swallow their pride are the ones that either don’t need to make it or will never make it.
I am the most determined and ambitious human being alive. If there were olympics for this; I would be a gold medalist. However, I am still fallible and I still have deep issues to sort out; that I am sorting out. Through my art, through my daily practice, through my education. I still spend too much time doing things that prevent me from going forward as powerfully as I could. I still make excuses. I procrastinate. Life is very challenging and demanding when one wants to get to the top.

But social media is helping me deal with my life better and enabling me to share my experience of life with dear someones in the webosphere.
Welcome to the new industrial revolution.
It all starts with you…
and me.
