The Nightshift

spent my whole life following the rules
had a name, chased fame
fell in love with losers
lost the lovers as i fell
for that spell
eventually it was just me
in an empty room
seasons changed
the years passed
lived on tax money
from a government i despised
never felt right

STARTED LOOKING FOR WORK
HATED THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE DAYLIGHT
AND THE FAKE JOY OF SUMMER
SO I TOOK THE NIGHTSHIFT

read the great outsider books
lived in my fantasies and fairy tales
and now i’m somewhere else
detached from all this
you see me and wonder

WHO I AM, WHERE I COME FROM
BUT I AM NOT REALLY HERE
THIS IS ALL SOME KIND OF DREAM
YOU ARE ASLEEP
WHILE I WORK THE NIGHTSHIFT

when morning comes
i will disappear
go live in a secret world
and play with unwanted thoughts
then turn all that mind noise
into sweet tunes of surrender
i can sing
as i work
the nightshift
