not tonight

as these hours hesitate
I am forced to confess
my stream of thoughts
and their quiet surrender
to the great sea
of my insomnia

hurry, hurry
I cannot move my love
stuck in the middle of the night
holding myself
I trip on shoelaces
and dog’s toys

when will it be over?
our hiding places uncovered
our paths traced
mr.death is catching up
in his black limo without brakes
not knowing
that mr.life
is behind the corner
ready to kill

my watch has stopped
I have not
A.M. blues
leave me nought
but a growling whisper
in my inner ear
telling me
she knows my fear
she cries my tear

I am the sensitive kind
who pretends to not care
I am also quite oblivious
to the calm despair
of the frozen river
ready to drown a man
in it’s sorrows
ready to burn her soul
with it’s dark love

I want to fall asleep
to thoughts of her
lying awake peacefully
looking for stars
in her darkness
wondering where her love is
and where it remains
I want to smell the soft night
that surrounds her
I want to feel her weeping smile
kiss me goodnight
sing me to sleep
with her lonesome lullaby

but I just can’t
not tonight
