Neverending War (NEW SONG)

(you can listen to the song and read the lyrics from the following link: https://soundcloud.com/sunlightheart/neverending-war)

It started as a melody which is unusual for me. I usually write my songs based on either lyrics or a guitar/piano part. I always have lyrics lying around and also different riffs and chord progressions and stuff which then kind of find one another. Melodies usually come on top of everything else. But yeah, this one started as a melody (I mean the first vocal melody of the song that kicks it off “all the lies and games…”). I just couldn’t get the melody out of my head, for months and months. It’s almost like a kids song melody which is something that I think Cobain did a lot with Nirvana’s songs like “Sliver”, “In Bloom”, and many others (which I grew up listening to and still love). Kurt delivered happy melodies combined with a ferocious delivery style unlike anything else before him. The Sex Pistols had the attitude and the danger but never really had the musical talent. The metal bands like Metallica had the anger and riffs but didn’t have the pop melodies—as fucking great as they are! Kurt had the melodies and the attitude and the sound and I loved this aspect of his music. So catchy but so aggressive and energetic, so intense. I’m not saying my song is like a Nirvana song though, other than that the similarities end. And I never really realized all this analysis until now, writing this.

So yeah, the melody was kicking around with that guitar part that kicks off the song. And then I started to find some lyrics in my head to go with the melody and the song sort of unravelled from there. I had this “Light me up, oh burning world” slogan also at that time running around in my head and I thought it conveyed everything I am about. I still think it would make a great t-shirt. It’s a powerful statement. The world is kind of broken and disconnected (or americanised humanity is) but that is also kind of good for artists because that forces art; and the artistic/creative process. And of course I am broken too. Maybe I think the world is broken because I am broken. Or maybe life is inherently broken… And then the whole Sunlight Heart concept came to fruition which was sort of tied to that whole thing; using that negative energy and turning it into something that might move people perhaps in a positive way or even to channel energy and let it out (as it does me). That’s what I was going for with this song. I want it to start a revolution. And most of my songs are more personal. This one is not about me in that sense. It’s about something bigger than me. Hence, the title. But it’s also about me…

This writing process took place about a year ago (during my 2-year reclusive period). I had a lot of trouble singing it. I just couldn’t find the right key. I tried recording some demos but actually never really played it to anyone as I wasn’t performing at the time. I was also afraid of singing the lyrics which are quite provocative and again, something new for me. And then I came to Estonia last autumn and started performing again but I still wasn’t confident enough to sing the song in the way it was supposed to be sung so I changed it into a different song with the same lyrics. The song I played live became more intimate and quiet (although intense in a different sort of way). Ironically enough I hid amongst this intimacy. I played it live many times but somehow I felt it lacked that attitude, that energy it demanded. The lyrics demanded it. You know for the revolution thing… And I wanted to be let loose out of my cage using the song as my rush of wild viking conqueror energy with his hair on fire and running naked through snowy jungles wrestling polar bears and eating rocks.

Well, that’s about all I have to say about this one.

I hope you like it. If you do, please share it with your friends. Let me know what you think. Comment here or on FB or soundcloud or wherever. Call me. Thanks. This is the new me. Hard country. Viking blues. Rock ‘N Roll pop anthems for the 21st century. Fuck that synth shit. It’s time to make some noise.

This is also the first proper recording of the song so it might still change when I start playing it live and when I begin working on my album in the summer. There might be some remixing/remastering done also but you probably don’t give a shit about that.

I’m proud of it more than any song I’ve done yet and that’s all that ultimately matters for me.

Sincerely,
Markus
