wrote this for my lover who is now a ghost
who felt like home but was just a motel poem
with a broken radiator i forgot to turn on
and now i’m back alone, woke up real cold
remember the days of payphones?
you could call that girl from texas who promised more
to come get you and bring a bottle of knob creek
and metallica’s kill’em all for the ride back
oh honey we let ourselves go too far to those dark places
so we could be unknown, so we could know if there were any traces
of love left or if this was all some kind of test or maybe
it was the madness of young lovers too old for this world
found a motel poem in her soul
mistook it for a home or i don’t even know
you stand there out in the rain with your stupid cowboy clothes
wonder what the fuck to do or where to go
they said Christ would come and not leave me comfortless
been waiting 37 years now
the religious folk don’t appeal to me any more than the atheists
it’s all just ideology and poetry
it’s like existence has lost its charm
i wonder if birds ever feel this way
how else could they sing so beautifully
and dress with such grace
