Last Day of The New Year

from the cold and dark
a new beginning starts
everything is left behind
for a chance to live a different life
it’s the last day of the new year
nothing familiar except a fear
haunting like a lullaby
as calm as a worried mind

into hope and dreams
new life is breathed
excited yet undecided
at which burden to bring and how to hide it
it’s the last day of the new year
to drown is to choke on air
as sad as a happy child
about to become the prey of life

stuck in a cage
unable to escape
before the mind is ready to know
there’s no right or wrong way to go
it’s the last day of the new year
laughing at the absence of tears
and the roof, the walls, the floors
forgotten, and (forever) wanting more
