Goodness

goodness is so far away for many
like a ship in the bottom of the sea
abandoned long ago
remaining only as a faint memory
a lonely word and nothing more

which makes trust a dangerous game
even if you still feel goodness
but some creatures are in desperate need of a hand
to help them find the goodness they once had

the beauty about goodness is
that it is real even when fake
goodness is invisible
to those who do not understand its power

goodness can be seen in one’s eyes
although it may be hidden, although it may have died
for eyes stripped of goodness
are like a plane in the sky without a pilot

but as much as goodness can be a rainbow
it can pierce the heart like a dagger
because a man who has no goodness left
sees it as something bitter, something to despise, something threatening
and will set out to destroy every ounce of it when in sight

goodness is like a stone
it lies vacant and alone
willing to guide
whether a friend or foe

goodness is the force that keeps us strong
it speaks to us through paintings and words and songs
it is a shadow in a dark room
it is the joyous freedom of a wandering balloon in the sky

when you see goodness
hold on to it
but don’t swallow it whole
because once you have enough
you must let the rest of it go

for there will always be awaiting
the hunger for goodness
of another crooked soul
who abandoned it not so long ago
