I was a bit disappointed with this book. The prose is lively and flies of the page occasionally buy I couldn’t connect with this world on a deeper level. The jazz styles of New Orleans or Chicago are fascinating worlds to occasionally visit for an artist in my current position. But eventually I feel a lack of depth in other elements that for me are lacking in this musical and emotional framework. The author is a good story teller (never heard his music or playing) but this style of writing requires something that very few have. I am a big fan of Henry Miller and Bukowski who do the neurotic ‘down and out’ thing better than anyone. I had the book lying around for a few years but until now, couldn’t finish it. Maybe I will revisi it again later in my life when I am a different person and experience it differently. I have a hardcover version so it is a cool book to have in my shelf.
