Stuck in the middle of the night once again. I fell asleep around 8:30 last night and woke up around midnight. We are recording this week and my head is just full of melodies, beats, arrangements and noise and energy. It’s there when I try to fall asleep and it’s there when I wake up. Life of a musician, eh? It’s hard to make it stop once you’re so caught up and excited in the whole process. But honestly, I love this feeling. I am really in my element when I am making music and doing what I love and do best.
The moments when I do feel tired and have the chance to sleep are very precious and I’ll just sleep then. Some say that our bodies are still evolutionarily adjusted to living in accordance with our biological clock which means we would sleep when it was dark and that all those hours before midnight spent sleeping will be a much more intense and deep sleep then a sleep schedule not in tune with our biological clock. Of course, where I live (in Finland), it’s winter and it’s always dark. I don’t think human beings are meant to live here… I don’t know if the sleeping thing is true. Somehow I doubt it. Although I do believe that human beings are still anatomically & physiologically adapted to tropical conditions no matter how far we have wandered from there. Just think about the climate/temperature we feel most comfortable in or the food our bodies are most adapted to. That is all the evidence I need. Well the experiment is on I guess (the sleeping thing). At least for today. I’ve never really done it consciously before. It’s also probably something that you would have to get used to. Of course the idea being that if you sleep before midnight, you have to sleep much less totally…
A few very strange yet significant and beautiful things have happened in the last two days and no I’m not talking about the new music we are making. But I’m only going to tell you about the other one because the other one you wouldn’t understand yet. Only one person could understand it (besides me). Perhaps these things are meaningless but hey I’m human (although sometimes I truly question that assumption, heh…), I get to make myself feel special no matter how stupid! haha….
I had all these plants in my little apartment but since it’s been so dark and since I was so lost and weird for those 3 months last year, they didn’t get enough a) sun & b) love. I tried to water them every so often. Well, most of them died and became crippled so I cut their limbs and branches and then they looked so ugly I threw them out. Most of them. But a few warrior plants survived and they are doing as great as ever and looking as great as ever. Today I came home and there were flowers blooming from one of my plants. Three beautiful orange flowers have broken through into this world and more are following as I write. I just felt amazed and in awe at the beauty of these flowers that grow in my own home in the dark cold winter without sunshine (although it is fairly warm inside of course). I tell myself that it is because I have been so good to them lately and I have felt so alive that my life force has spread into them. I wish I had a camera to take a photo… (note to self: I really should get a decent camera). I just went to look at them and smell them and I can see there’s 5-6 more bulbs getting ready to fill my heart with more joy! I love plants and flowers. Heck, I love all living things! Life is so mesmerizing when you learn to appreciate the small little things that happen constantly. The tiny miracles of every moment. All we have to do is look and listen and feel!
Well, just thought I would share that with you. A little midnight inspiration from the one who knows nothing.
Hmmm… I wonder what I should do now? I think I’m going to make some tea and watch this documentary on Ayn Rand I have on my computer. She is such a fascinating woman.
Recording continues tomorrow…
