Health Is Wealth

So i’m making myself a nice big bowl of fruit for lunch and my dad comes in
and says “do you know how much this fruit is costing us that you eat? it must
be 30 € per day”

i reply no it’s more like 15 euros.

The reason this ‘argument’ is interesting is that last night my family went to an
expensive gourmet restaurant and I declined to go and said I would rather eat
fruit at home. On top of this, they just bought a 5000€ couch (no kidding) +
are spending about 20 – 30 000 euros on my sisters wedding. Oh and my dad
smokes a few packs of expensive cigars everyday and drinks wine and beer
more in a month than most in a year. The point is, my family is not poor.

But when it comes to the health of their middle child son…

(i am currently living at home temporarily trying to my feet back on the
ground and saving money to leave the nest… I had some problems earlier this
year…)

I am doing some work on the yard to get money and offer to take my pay in
fruit but then it becomes …” well…it’s not that we can’t afford it…”

Well what is the problem then? I reply

“you won’t be able to afford this diet when you’re on your own”

I tell them that although this MIGHT be true, it’s important to remember that I
don’t drink nor smoke nor spend my money on anything else really. They
know this. No counter argument is offered.

That’s when the discussion gets reaaally interesting.

You see, my dad is a hunter, meat loving, bear drinking, ultra masculine, old
fashioned kind of guy. But clearly he’s been holding back when it comes to
commenting about my recent attempt at living it healthy. Actually he hasn’t
said a word until now…

I tell him that how can anybody afford NOT to prioritize their health?

“But you have to keep your bodily functions working and by eating that
(points at my delicious grapes) your body is going to stop working).

????

From here on the conv goes into such territory that it’s not even worth writing.
I try to explain to him how fruit is the ideal food for humans. Basically his
argument is that ‘you have to eat waste also to keep your waste removal
procees from failing’. A year ago I was 811 for 30 days (my first experiment)
and when I stopped and gorged myself on meat and other junk, I spent the
whole night vomiting and got really sick because my body wasn’t used to it
anymore.

But I tell him that we cannot live like this. I mean, should we take drugs to
maintain a tolerance for them in case we ever need to?

He says “normal food works just fine and I don’t believe in your diet crap”

I tell him that this is not a matter of belief. It’s science. I eat for nutrition first
and foremost. The great thing is that real pleasure ultimately comes hand to
hand with what’s good for us, good for nature and good for everyone.

I also remind that if you go to a hospital, you can be very certain that these
people aren’t eating too much fruit or veggies.

My parents are just so …. aaaah. It’s almost a useless thought. But it’s so
frustrating having a conversation with someone who just doesn’t understand
anything about anything.

So he’s worried that someone can eat TOO healthily. As if i’m not getting any
toxic residue out of my fruit that has been shipped from the other side of the
world… ( i know, this is not the most environmentally friendly way to eat
where I live but it’s better than eating crap because my body is also an
environment right?)

“but nobody knows what happens when you eat like that for a long time”

I tell him he’s right. Nobody knows. For sure. But we do know what doesn’t
work. From that we can build our knowledge.

I really wish I was living on my own right now. It’s not financially possible. I
applied to a uni and within the next 2 weeks i’ll know. Fingers crossed.
